Abstract
It is suggested that the agent for transmissible spongiform encephalop athies is trasferred from an original peripheral site of infection int o the brain by recruited and selected circulating macrophages/monocyte s. It is because of this selection that strains of disease appear to b e different when infecting separate species, but retain characteristic s when infecting a single species.
