Patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) frequent
ly develop skin diseases that are responsive to ultraviolet (UV) radia
tion. Studies on the effects of UV on HIV and on the immune system in
vitro and in transgenic animals have raised questions regarding the sa
fety of UV exposure in these patients. In this article, invited expert
