Today HPLC is an indispensable analytical method in carotenoid researc
h. Different systems for the separation of carotenes, hydroxycarotenoi
ds (lutein/zeaxanthin; violaxanthin/neoxanthin), E/Z isomers and optic
al isomers are discussed. Minimum criteria for the proper identificati
on of a carotenoid are postulated. The application of SFC to the separ
ation of carotenoids is reviewed and it is shown that this method is g
enerally of less importance in the carotenoid field.
