The significance of assessing the intelligence of hospitalized people
with psychiatric disabilities with low cognitive ability is discussed,
along with a review of the relevant literature. One publicly supporte
d hospital from each of the United States (except Alaska and Hawaii) w
as surveyed to determine what instruments of intellectual ability are
presently employed, and what instruments are considered appropriate to
evaluate this population. The results are presented with discussion.
