The scaling relationships required to model the dispersion of a buoyan
t plume in a convective flow have been developed, in particular a modi
fied Froude number has been used which maintains a correctly scaled pa
th for the plume and kinematic similarity between the vertical convect
ive and longitudinal free-stream velocities. Scale models of atmospher
ic convective boundary layers have been developed in the new Monash Un
iversity Environmental Wind Tunnel and examples of the characteristics
of the largest scale, 1/100, are presented, in particular observing t
he spectral distributions of the longitudinal and vertical velocity co
mponents with increasing convection.
