Abstract
Modern movement analysis has significantly altered the surgical treatm ent of cerebral palsy. By providing an objective measurement of pre- a nd postoperative kinematics, kinetics, and electromyography, treatment s can be devised and outcomes can be assessed. This article reviews th e rationale for gait analysis, its component parts, and its utility in the development of modern surgical concepts, such as single stage sur gery of the lower extremities, rectus to hamstring transfers, treatmen t of ankle equinus, and upper extremity tendon transfers. It's use as a clinical tool is also emphasized. (C) 1997 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
