Preferred air velocity, vas investigated by testing a total of 241 Japa
nese subjects under different air temperatures and humidities in a cli
mate chamber. The work, vas done to encourage energy efficient air-cond
itioning design. Increases in air temperature and relative humidity we
re compensated by increases in preferred air velocity, and then the su
bjects reported themselves both slightly cool and comfortable. In addi
tion, differences in preferred air velocity with seasonal variation, i
ndividual variation, age and sex were examined. (C) 1997 Elsevier Scie
