Abstract
A DNA copy of the entire translated region of foot-and-mouth disease v irus A(22) and a version with deletion of the leader protease gene wer e constructed. The viral polyproteins translated from transcripts of t hese cDNA were processed by viral proteases to individual mature prote ins. The translation efficiency of native RNA without the 8 fragment a nd of transcripts from cDNA (without 850 nt of the genome 5' end) was respectively 20 and 10% of that for intact viral RNA. The influence of the length of the 5'-untranslated region of foot-and-mouth disease vi rus serotypes O-1 and A(22) on in vitro translation efficiency is disc ussed.
