Systems of the Pd(Acac)(2)-BF3OEt2 type were shown to catalyze telomer
ization of butadiene with secondary aliphatic and aromatic amines unde
r mild conditions. Reactions of Pd(Acac)(2), BF3OEt2, diethylamine, an
d butadiene were studied by IR and UV spectroscopy. A number of interm
ediate complexes, e.g., [(Acac)Pd(Et2NH)(2)]BF4, were isolated, and th
eir catalytic activity was studied. The possibility of cationic pallad
ium hydride formation on successive participation of a secondary amine
and butadiene was confined for the system under study. A scheme for t
he formation of the active complex was proposed.
