Sl. Jacobson et S. Kennedy, TIME, MONEY, AND THE CONTROL OF ONES OWN WORK LIFE - AN EXAMINATION OF THE DEFERRED SALARY LEAVE PLAN, Educational policy, 11(3), 1997, pp. 267-285
This article describes a contractually negotiated income/leisure subst
itution provision commonly used in Canada but relatively unknown to sc
hool districts in the United States. Known as the deferred salary leav
e plan, this personnel policy enables teachers to assume greater contr
ol over their own work lives by allowing them to set aside monies to u
nderwrite their own leaves of absence. After first examining this poli
cy innovation, the authors argue that opportunities for income/leisure
substitutions such as the deferred salary leave plan may help teacher
s alleviate job stress, offset the increased work demands of reform in
itiatives such as site-based management and shared decision making, an
d cause educational policy makers to reconsider common but rather narr
ow conceptions of staff development.
