Yr. Huang et Cc. Healy, THE RELATIONS OF HOLLAND-TYPED MAJORS TO STUDENTS FRESHMAN AND SENIORWORK VALUES, Research in higher education, 38(4), 1997, pp. 455-477
Guided by Holland's (1985) theory of career choice, this study investi
gated the relationship between Holland-typed majors (RIASEC) and six u
ndergraduate work values (authority, recognition, administrative respo
nsibility, financial success, helping others, and artistic creativity)
. The participants were 18,137 students who persisted at four-year ins
titutions from 1985 to 1989, The MANOVA results show that Holland-type
d majors attract freshmen whose work values fit the departmental envir
onment in which the major is located. The multiple regression analyses
further indicate that after taking account of the freshman value scor
e, the Holland-typed majors in senior year help in predicting the seni
ors' work values.
