THE MUSICAL RESTORATION OF THE JOUEUSE-DE-TYMPANON

A new concept for restoring antique musical mechanisms is described. H aving recorded the original sound and noted the static and dynamic rea dings of pitch and rhythm, an audio MIDI processing system enabled the virtual reconstruction by computer of the musical performance of the ''Joueuse de tympanon,'' a mechanical musician from the 18th century. This studio editing work is recommended as a guide for the restoration of this mechanical instrument.
