In this paper, we describe how the computationally efficient one-dimen
sional MODE (ID-MODE) algorithm can be used to estimate the frequencie
s of two-dimensional complex sinusoids. We show that the ID-MODE algor
ithm is computationally more efficient than the asymptotically statist
ically efficient 2D-MODE algorithm, especially when the numbers of spa
tial measurements are large. Interestingly enough, we prove that the I
D-MODE algorithm is asymptotically statistically efficient for high si
gnal-to-noise ratio. We also show that although ID-MODE is no longer s
tatistically efficient when the number of temporal snapshots is large,
the performance of ID-MODE can still be very close to that of the 2D-
MODE under mild conditions. Numerical examples comparing the performan
ces of the ID-MODE and 2D-MODE algorithms are also presented.
