On the basis of the analysis of data on mesoplankton, collected in ult
raoligotrophic waters of North-Atlantic anticyclonic Gyre (cruises 34
and 39 of R/V ''Akademik Mstislav Keldysh'', 1994, 1996) the measured
values of biomass of small (less than or equal to 3 mm) and large (> 3
mm) mesoplankton were compared with the ones calculated by two method
s: from average values for waters of different productivity level eval
uated by remote sensing, and from regression equations between mesopla
nkton concentration and primary production and water transparency, mea
sured by Secchi disk. The measured and calculated values are shown to
be similar. It allows the calculated values of ecosystem characteristi
cs to be used for evaluation the stocks of planktonic organisms, their
production, destruction, destruction, etc., in the quasi stable regio
ns of the ocean. In dynamically active waters (frontal zones and coast
al regions) use of calculated values can result in displaced estimatio
ns.
