Oe. Marfenina et Ia. Ishchenko, EARTHWORMS PREFERENCE FOR SOIL MICROSCOPI C FUNGI, Izvestia Akademii nauk SSSR. Seria biologiceskaa, (4), 1997, pp. 504-506
Choice experiments have demonstrated that earthworms Eisenia fetida di
scriminate between microscopic fungi. Specifically, dark melanin-conta
ining fungi, such as Cladosporium cladosporioides, are the most attrac
tive for the worms. Aspergillus niger specific for polluted and man-di
sturbed soils is not attractive but rather repellent and toxic for the
worms.
