The nanofiltration process for water treatment acts as an excellent ph
ysical barrier for elements and molecules contained in water. The effe
cts of water parameters such as mineralisation, organic matter, sulpha
tes and chlorides are greatly reduced by this process. This has a posi
tive effect on the lifetime of the distribution networks and on the re
lease of metallic species in drinking water. Experimental studies have
shown that nanofiltration with limited post-treatment reduces lead so
lubility up to 50% and produces water with characteristics which allow
the protection of all materials in distribution systems. A sort of id
eal water with a low corrosivity for materials used in public and dome
stic networks is obtained with such treatment.
