Abstract
The worldwide demand for energy and the need to minimize the environme ntal impact present a challenge which has been addressed by the Intern ational Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) and the World E nergy Council (WEC). This paper summarizes the findings of a joint two -year IIASA-WEC study to explore the prospects for improving the globa l availability and quality of energy services, and the wider implicati ons that these improvements may have.
