The heterogenization of plastic deformation in shear bands creates a p
ossibility to control the spatial distribution of precipitated phases
by their preferential nucleation and growth on structural defects insi
de the shear bands. Basing on such a concept an experiment has been ca
rried out on lead brass to check the possibility of the redistribution
of alpha and beta phases from a chaotic to ordered, composite-like fo
rm. The results reveal a significant effect of shear banding at high t
emperature on the spatial distribution of phases in the alloy. The yie
ld point of material with composite-like structure is almost by 40% gr
eater when compared with that of material treated in the conventional
way, while ductility remains the same. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.
