Abstract
A mechanism of cooperative generation of dislocation loops above a cri tical temperature in loaded solids is described. We model the massive dislocation activity which commences near the crack tip at the brittle -to-ductile transition temperature in terms of this mechanism and show that it can explain the main features of the transition.
