Abstract
The effect of divalent calcium, europium and nickel, in the form of se cond-phase particles, upon the mechanical characteristics of NaCl crys tals was studied in some detail. It has been shown that coherent and i ncoherent precipitates have quite different effect upon the Vickers mi crohardness and also the macroscopic yield stress. The relationship be tween both characteristics is linear but different from the Tabor-rela tion typical of ductile materials. Regardless of the theoretical signi ficance, this relation could serve as a quick and valuable guide in ma ny applications. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.
