Abstract
PKB/Akt is a serine/threonine kinase that contains a pleckstrin-homolo gy (PH) domain and is activated in response to growth-factor treatment of cells by a mechanism involving phosphoinositide 3-OH kinase. PKB/A kt provides a survival signal that protects cells from apoptosis induc ed by various stresses, perhaps explaining its discovery as a retrovir al oncogene and its amplification in many human tumours.
