Nanoclusters of Se, Rb-Se, and Cs-Se were incorporated in the supercag
es of Y zeolite. Anomalous x-ray scattering established that the Se cl
usters take the form of weakly interacting chains with a disordered st
ructure similar to that of amorphous Se, while the Rb-Se and Cs-Se clu
sters contain Se-2(2-) Zintl ions as in crystalline and liquid bulk ph
ases. The Raman spectra of the nanoclusters exhibit features found in
the bulk disordered phases.
