R. Lampard et al., LIMITS ON SOURCE DISTANCES FOR THE MOST ENERGETIC COSMIC-RAYS IN INTERGALACTIC MAGNETIC-FIELDS, Astroparticle physics, 7(3), 1997, pp. 213-218
The propagation of the highest energy cosmic rays through the intergal
actic magnetic field is considered, including the effect of interactio
ns with the 2.7 K microwave background. Energy loss in the microwave b
ackground due to photo-pion production limits the total distance trave
lled by the cosmic rays and the turbulent intergalactic held determine
s their total displacement. At energies above 10(20) eV, the average d
isplacements are a few tens of megaparsecs, limiting possible sources
to the volume dominated by the supergalactic plane. (C) 1997 Elsevier
