The exchange interaction and force acting between magnetic moments of
a ferromagnetic sample and tip are calculated using the one-dimensiona
l electron-gas model. It is suggested from an estimate of their magnit
udes that an atomic-resolution image of exchange interaction of the tr
ansition-metal sample and tip can be obtained with the use of atomic f
orce microscopy (AFM).
