A novel type of porous electrode, namely, composite hydrophilized gas-
generating porous electrodes, is suggested. Hydrophilic porous additiv
es, which are electrochemically inactive, decrease the ionic ohmic los
ses and increase the quantity of the gas generated. Hydrophilization o
ccurs only in the region adjacent to the front side of the electrode.
There is no hydrophilizer on the rear side of the composite electrode.
Under certain conditions, this can even further increase the quantity
of the gas generated.
