Two new chromanols, named garcinoic acid and garcinal, were isolated t
ogether with a known chromanol, delta-tocotrienol and three known bifl
avonoids, garcinianin, GB-1 and GB-2, from the seeds of Garcinia kola
Heckel (Guttiferae) collected in Nigeria and their structures were cha
racterized on the basis of the spectroscopic and chemical evidence. Ga
rcinoic acid, garcinal and delta-tocotrienol showed about 1.5 times st
ronger antioxidation activity than that of dl-alpha-tocopherol.
