It is shown that the Gelfand-Weyl pattern for SU(3) can be uniquely ex
pressed in terms of four non-negative and one positive or negative fre
e integers. This provides an optimal, albeit non-linear, boson calculu
s for SU(3) in terms of four harmonic oscillators and one planar rotor
. (By optimal it is meant that every irreducible representation is obt
ained once and once only.) Our techniques can be generalized to other
groups. (C) 1997 American Institute of Physics.
