THE TAXONOMIC STATUS OF LANIARIUS-DUBIOSUS (RCHW. 1899) WITH ADDITIONAL DATA ON TYPE DESCRIPTION OF LANIARIUS-LIBERATUS, BULO-BURTI-BOUBOU (SMITH, ARCTANDER, FJELDSA AND AMIR 1991)
R. Prinzinger et al., THE TAXONOMIC STATUS OF LANIARIUS-DUBIOSUS (RCHW. 1899) WITH ADDITIONAL DATA ON TYPE DESCRIPTION OF LANIARIUS-LIBERATUS, BULO-BURTI-BOUBOU (SMITH, ARCTANDER, FJELDSA AND AMIR 1991), Journal fur Ornithologie, 138(3), 1997, pp. 283-289
In 1899 REICHENOW described a new bushshrike species from East Cameroo
ns which he named Laniarius dubiosus. This bird was in juvenile plumag
e (a colour-plate is given). DNA-sequence-analysis of cytochrome b (fr
om feathers and skin of the type specimen ZMB 33 764 from Berlin) show
s that this bird is a juvenile of the western race of Luehder's Bushsh
rike Laniarius luhderi. The first presumed assumption - based on a gre
at plumage similarity - that L. dubiosus may be a juvenile from the re
cently new described Bulo Burti Boubou Laniarius liberatus (SMITH, ARC
TANDER, FJELDSA, & AMIR 1991) could not be supported. L. dubiosus sequ
ences are distinct from L. liberatus (see PRINZINGER et al. 1997). Add
itional data for the type description of Laniarius liberatus are given
for the voice (sonagrams) and the coloration of plumage.
