The determination of manganese(II) in natural water and effluent strea
ms, using a solid-phase reactor incorporated into a flow-injection sys
tem, was investigated. Mn2+-ions in samples injected into a earner str
eam, were oxidised by solid lead(IV) dioxide suspended on silica gel b
eads to form MnO4--ions which were detected spectrophotometrically at
526 nm. The linear range of the system is between I to 5 mg l(-1) with
a detection limit of 0.56 mg l(-1). The proposed system is suitable f
or the determination of manganese(II) in natural water and effluent st
reams with a relative standard deviation of better than 1.8%.
