The focus of this article is on the results of quantitative studies in
human infants. The cerebral blood flow (CBF) and metabolic rate is lo
w in newborn infants. The regulation of CBF appears largely normal in
healthy term and preterm infants. CBF and metabolic abnormalities in h
ypo-and hypertension and hypoglycemia after asphyxia and intracranial
hemorrhage and during seizures are discussed. This article reviews cur
rent clinical research methods.
