We analyse a cyclotron resonance maser (CRM) operating simultaneously
at two resonant frequencies of the same waveguide node which co-propag
ates with the electron beam. A set of scaled equations describing the
interaction are derived; from these constants of motion and expression
s for the efficiency are obtained, Both linear and numerical solutions
to ?he equations are given. We show that whereas, under certain condi
tions, the single-frequency operation of the CRM and the free electron
laser (FEL) may be modelled by a single system of scaled equations, t
his is not possible for the case of two-frequency operation. It is sho
wn that injection ol a low-frequency mode may stimulate electron bunch
ing, and so enhanced emission, at a higher harmonic. For a large regio
n of parameter space the lower frequency has the larger exponential gr
owth rate; however, we show that there is a region where exponential g
rowth of the lower frequency can be suppressed allowing high-frequency
mode exponential growth to saturation. This may offer the prospect of
novel CRM operation at higher frequencies.
