Abstract
The degree of swelling of a polymer hydrogel depends on the aqueous so lution in which it is immersed, among other factors. When a volume pha se hologram is engraved in a hydrogel film, the dependence of its diff raction efficiency on osmosis in saline solution can be used as a prob e for measuring the concentration of the solute. The sensitivity of th is in-line control technique is better than 20 mg dm(-3) of KBr.
