The data on the reactions of initiation of carbocationic olefin polyme
rization and catalytic degradation of saturated polyolefins under the
action of Lewis acids are considered and summarized. The new catalytic
properties of strong Lewis acids, which imply their ability to initia
te the above processes according to the single-electron transfer mecha
nism (direct initiation) with generation of ion-radical and radical ac
tive centers, were discovered.
