This article discusses the control of nosocomial infection using strat
egies other than antimicrobial therapy, based on the concepts of aseps
is, disinfection and isolation of infectious patients. The aim is to p
revent the spread of pathogenic organisms from patient to patient. Inf
ection control techniques are practised in parallel with direct antibi
otic therapy but should reduce the overall use of antibiotics, and red
uce the selection pressure for organisms to develop resistance.
