The presence of a scalar interaction in nuclear beta-decay was studied
by measuring the beta-neutrino correlation coefficient alpha in the s
uperallowed pure Fermi beta-transition Ne-18(O+) --> F-18(O+, 1040 keV
) (T-1/2 = 1.67 s). The resulting value, i.e. alpha = + 1.06 +/- 0.19
(error quoted at 2 sigma), corresponds to the limit root/C-s/(2) + \C-
s'\(2) less than or equal to 0.29\C-v\ (95%) CL for the scalar couplin
g constant. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.
