600 patients with total hip replacement were examined for concomitant
internistic diseases. Their average age was 70.7 years; 72.8% of the e
xamined patients were women and 27.2% men. The most frequent cause of
implantation was osteoarthritis of the hip, followed by fracture of th
e neck of the femur and rheumatoid arthritis. On considering the conco
mitant diseases there was marked multimorbidity among the predominantl
y elderly patients. 51.5% of the examined patients had 5 and more conc
omitant diseases. Cardiovascular diseases ranked first (e.g. coronary
heart disease 24.7%), followed by thyroid diseases and diseases of the
gallbladder. 5.7% suffered from a malignoma or had already been treat
ed for the same.
