Abstract
The Antiarrhythmics Versus Implantable Defibrillator (AVID) trial was halted recently, following a demonstration of 38% improved survival at 1 year in patients randomized to defibrillators. Although the trial r eaffirms the superiority of implantable cardiac defibrillators over an tiarrhythmic drugs for therapy of aborted sudden arrhythmic death, the authors provide an opinion that the trial was unnecessary and that th e trial was flawed, raising serious scientific and ethical questions a bout the trial's conduct.
