Abstract
Tearing modes are suspected to be a principal cause of both minor and major disruptions in a tokamak. Suppression of these modes via a neutr al beam which supplies momentum, energy and particles of appropriate p hase and amplitude is considered. Model theoretical calculations are p resented for the stabilization of drift tearing modes and it is found that for ADITYA [SB. Bhatt et al. Ind. J. Pure Appl. Phys. 27, 710 (19 89)] and other present-day tokamak parameters, stabilization is achiev able using modest levels of beam power current and density. (C) 1997 A merican Institute of Physics.
