Tin-119 and phosphorus-31 NMR spectra have been recorded for three tin
tetrahalide complexes with tetraethyl propylenediphosphonate SnX4 . L
, where L = (EtO)(2)P(O)CH2 CHMeP(O)(OEt)(2), X = Cl (1); X = Br (2);
X = I (3). Each complex exists in solution in the form of only one iso
mer with two different phosphoryl units coordinated at tin. The crysta
l structure of SnCl4 . L (1) has been determined. The complex has a mo
nomeric 7-membered chelate structure with octahedral environment at ti
n. It crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/n with a=9.531(
2) Angstrom, b=16.556(3)Angstrom, c=14.634(3)Angstrom, beta=98.73(3)de
grees, Z=4, d(calc) = 1.678 Mg/m(3), N-obs = 2813, R = 0.045.
