Twelve triterpenes were isolated from the alcoholic extract of Mentha
villosa as their acetyl methyl eater derivatives. This vegetal specime
n, which was collected in the Horto de Plantas Medicinals da Universid
ade Federal do Ceara, Fortaleza, Brazil, is used as popular remedy in
the treatment of amebiasis, giardiasis and shisto-somiasis. The separa
tion and purification of the triterpenoid derivatives from complex mix
tures of closely related isomeric triterpenoid acids has been performe
d successfully by reversed-phase HPLC.
