Abstract
A series of stilbazolium amphiphilic dyes has been synthesized under a variation of the chromophore structure. AMI(SOS) calculations of beta were performed. In the near-resonance region a marked wavelength depe ndence of the conversion efficiency in the DFWM experiment is observed which does not follow the absorption. chi((3)) values are in the rang e of 10(-9) to 10(-10) esu.
