Abstract
This study presents a novel application of giant magnetostrictive mate
rial to a three-dimensional vibration sensor. It is called three-dimen
sional since it is intended to measure a vibration exerted along an ar
bitrary direction. The sensor signals are measured when the sensor att
itude relative to the direction of a vibration is varied. Based on the
se measurements identification of an unknown vibration is attempted by
means of a learning technique. A neural network is employed in order
to learn measurement data. Generalization of the trained network is te
sted on unknown sample data. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.
