Rm. Bluthe et al., LIPOPOLYSACCHARIDE INDUCES SICKNESS BEHAVIOR IN RATS BY A VAGAL MEDIATED MECHANISM, Comptes rendus de l'Academie des sciences. Serie 3, Sciences de la vie, 317(6), 1994, pp. 499-503
To assess the possibility that lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induces sickne
ss behaviour by activating nerves, the effects of LPS (1.25 mg Kg(-1),
intraperitoneally) were in vagotomized and sham-operated rats. Subdia
phragmatic vagotomy blocked the LPS-induced depression of social inves
tigation but had no effect on LPS-induced increases in levels of lL-1
beta in plasma and peritoneal macrophages and on LPS-induced changes i
n dehydrogenase activity of peritoneal macrophages.
