A magneto-optic measurement system for the 1.4-6.8eV photon energy ran
ge (lambda=182-886 nm) is realized. A new technique to calibrate the a
pplied modulator in-situ, essential for accurate measurements over suc
h a wide range of photon energies, is demonstrated. Measurements at Co
/Pt multilayers with 3 Angstrom Co layers and various Pt layer thickne
sses indicate a peak for the polar Kerr rotation (similar to -0.5 degr
ees) at about 5.1eV, which is not present in CoPt3 alloy film. This fe
ature may be partly due to quantum web effects, but there is also a po
ssibility for an optical interference effect. Furthermore, positive Ke
rr rotations up to about +0.4 degrees were found at photon energies ab
ove 5.7eV.
