The alloys series Tb1-xDyxZn, x less than or equal to 0.6, has been sh
own to undergo easy-axis reorientations at low temperatures. In this p
aper results of magnetization on single crystal disks of Tb0.6Dy0.4Zn
are reported. Maxima in the magnetization as much as 15 degrees from t
he [100] axes were found below T-R congruent to 20 K, Magnetostriction
s of 5 x 10(-3) were measured at 77 K on single crystal rods. Magnetiz
ation versus field curves under a series of compressive stresses have
verified the highly magnetoelastic nature of this alloy, The non-princ
ipal magnetization orientations are discussed on a phenomenological mo
del which includes an eighth-order anisotropy term.
