The discharge physics and plasma chemistry of dielectric barrier disch
arges (silent discharges) is discussed. Numerical models describing el
ectrical breakdown, microdischarge formation and the ensuing free radi
cal chemistry are presented. Applications ranging from ozone generatio
n, excimer UV lamps and CO2 lasers to surface treatment and pollution
control are described. Experimental and modelling results on CO2 hydro
genation in dielectric barrier discharges are also presented.
