Tf. Eamon et D. Elliott, MODERNIZATION VERSUS TRADITIONALISM IN NORTH-CAROLINA SENATE RACES - HIDDEN HOPE FOR THE DEMOCRATS, Social science quarterly, 75(2), 1994, pp. 354-367
This demographic study focuses on cleavages which develop when souther
n Republicans campaign on a militantly conservative social agenda. Loo
king at three diverse North Carolina senatorial elections, it finds th
at dramatic right-wing Republican gains among whites living in countie
s with a high proportion of blacks are counteracted in part by losses
in metropolitan areas. Despite seeming atrophy in the Democratic coali
tion, the analysis questions recent studies which suggest a continued
drift to the GOP.
