Abstract
This demographic study focuses on cleavages which develop when souther n Republicans campaign on a militantly conservative social agenda. Loo king at three diverse North Carolina senatorial elections, it finds th at dramatic right-wing Republican gains among whites living in countie s with a high proportion of blacks are counteracted in part by losses in metropolitan areas. Despite seeming atrophy in the Democratic coali tion, the analysis questions recent studies which suggest a continued drift to the GOP.
