The photolysis of aqueous acid solutions of Mo2O42+ containing bromide
ion as a ligand was studied by flash-photolysis. The decay of the det
ected reaction intermediates follows a first order kinetics. The obser
ved rate constant, determined at different temperatures is inversely d
ependent on hydrogen ion concentration and independent of bromide ion
concentration. The results are interpreted in terms of a reaction mech
anism which proposes the decay of the reaction intermediate Mo2O3(H2O)
(7)Br3+ leading to the formation of Mo(VI) and H-2, detected as reacti
on products. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.
