The photovoltaic stability of Ru-II(LH2)(2)(NCS)(2) (where LH2 = 2,2'-
bipyridyl-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid), a potential sensitizer for solar ce
lls based on anatase, is examined. Its suitability for this role is de
monstrated by a 7000 h endurance test, at the end of which no discerni
ble signs of degradation can be detected. An explanation for its remar
kable stability is provided by an investigation of its photo-and therm
ally induced reactions in alcoholic solution. Recommendations as to ho
w to avoid ligand substitution reactions that may be undesirable for c
ertain applications are also made.
