Second-harmonic generation in the layered semiconductor GaS excited wi
th the wavelength lambda = 1579 nm is investigated with the Maker frin
ge technique. It is shown that the second-harmonic signal originates f
rom domains in the crystal, which consist of the noncentrosymmetric C-
5(3 upsilon) polytype. The results are in good agreement with X-ray di
